A Courtyard House Defined by the Control of Views and Space
The site is located within a privileged residential setting adjacent to a public park. While the surrounding greenery and openness offer the potential to enrich everyday domestic life, the proximity of a public space frequented by an unspecified number of people requires a carefully calibrated relationship between the dwelling and its exterior environment.
The project was developed around the proposition that the quality of architecture may be determined by the manner in which visual relationships and spatial conditions are controlled.
The house is organized around an internal courtyard, which screens views from the surrounding context while introducing light, air, sky, and the presence of vegetation into the interior. The courtyard is not conceived merely as an enclosed outdoor space. Rather, it functions as a mediating zone through which the environment of the park is selected, moderated, and transformed into a condition appropriate to domestic life.
Walls and openings are therefore treated not simply as elements of enclosure, but as architectural devices that determine what is revealed, what is concealed, and to what extent adjacent spaces are allowed to remain continuous. Through the precise calibration of sightlines, aperture dimensions, distances between interior and exterior, and the relationships among individual spaces, the project seeks to construct a residential environment in which enclosure and openness, as well as publicness and privacy, coexist.
The house neither opens itself unconditionally toward the park nor withdraws completely from its surroundings. Instead, it selectively edits its relationship with the external environment. By regulating the density of visual and spatial connections, the courtyard house preserves the richness of the site while establishing a quiet and autonomous interior world.
視線と空間を制御するコートハウス
敷地は、公園に隣接する恵まれた住宅地に位置しています。豊かな緑や開放性を日常の生活空間へ取り込める一方で、不特定多数の人が行き交う公共空間に近接するため、外部との関係には慎重な調整が求められます。
本計画では、建築の質は、視線と空間の関係をいかに制御するかによって決定されるのではないか、という問いを設計の主題としました。
住宅は中庭を中心として構成され、周囲からの視線を遮りながら、内部には光や風、空、植栽の気配を導き入れます。ここで中庭は、単に閉鎖された屋外空間ではありません。公園の環境を直接的に取り込むのではなく、建築によって選択し、調整し、生活にふさわしい距離へと変換するための媒介領域として位置づけられています。
壁や開口部は、空間を閉ざすためだけに設けられるのではなく、何を見せ、何を隠し、どこまで空間を連続させるかを決定する装置として扱われます。視線の方向、開口の大きさ、内外の距離、空間相互のつながりを精緻に調整することで、閉鎖性と開放性、公共性と私性が共存する住環境を構築しようとしています。
この住宅は、公園に対して無条件に開くのでも、周囲から完全に閉じるのでもありません。外部環境との関係を選択的に編集し、視線と空間の密度を制御することによって、場所の豊かさを保持しながら、静かで自律した内部世界を形成するコートハウスです。
